Text Ads and Image/Rich Media Ads You Can Show on Your Site through Google AdSense

There are different types of ads you can show on your page. You can show text ads, image ads or the ads which have videos. Here is the detailed explanation for the ads that you can display.

Text Ads

  • What are text ads?
    • These ads are the standard AdSense ads. It comes in 12 sizes and the colors of these text ads can be customized too. A headline, an ad text and the URL is the contents of a text ad.

  • Why should I use them?
    • This type of ad can easily be customized to fit the layout of your site and it performs effectively with a variety of colors and sizes.
    • How are they targeted to my site?
      • Advertisers may match the ads to your site using placement targeting or it can be contextually targeted to the contents of your page.
      • How am I paid for them?
        • The advertiser is the one who decides on how you will be paid. It can be when a user views or clicks the ad.
        • How do I get them?
          • You can get text ads by going to the My ads tab in your account. Click on the New ad unit. You will see an Ad type drop-down. Choose Text and image/rich media ads or you can choose Text ads only. Customize you ad unit, and get the HTML code. You will need the code for you to display the ad in your pages.

Image/Rich Media Ads

  • What are image ads?
    • Image ads are ads that use graphics in different formats. Here are the ad formats offered by google:
      • Leaderboard (728 x 90)
      • Banner (468 x 60)
      • Skyscraper (120 x 600)
      • Square (250 x 250)
      • small square (200×200)
      • medium rectangle (300×250)
      • large rectangle (336×280)
      • wide skyscraper (160×600)

The image/rich media ads also include video ads. It does not play by itself; it needs to be clicked by the user first. The video ad will initially be shown as an image ad until the user decides to click it. If the user wishes to go to the site of the advertiser, the user only needs to click the Display URL or the ad. The volume of the video can be controlled by the user and he can also replay it.

Why should I use them?

You can use these types of ads if you want to increase the ad competition in your pages. Though both text ads and image/rich media ads can be displayed on your pages, the advertisers will compete for the ad space that you have thus increasing your potential earnings. Another thing is the availability of various ads. Your users won’t get immune from seeing the same type of ads over and over again in your site.

How are they targeted to my site?

It is the same as the targeting of the text ads.

How am I paid for them?

Again, the advertiser is the one who will decide on how you will be paid. You can be paid either when the user decides to view or click the ad. For video ads, you will not be paid if the user decides to play the video, but you will be paid if the user goes to the advertiser’s site.

How do I get them?

  1. You can get this type of ad by going to the My ads tab in your account. Click on Content as the product.
  2. Select New ad unit.
  3. Choose the ad size which is appropriate for image and video asd.
  4. When you see the Ad type drop down, you can either choose the Image/rich media ads only or the Text and image/rich media ads.
